Spanish: “Espejo, espejito, en la pared” (mirror, small/little mirror, on the wall) However, it's actually "sabio espejo consejero" (wise mirror adviser) Italian: "specchio specchio delle mie brame" (mirror mirror of my desires) but it's actually "specchio, servo delle mie brame" (mirror, servant of my desires). Portuguese: "ESPELHO ESPELHO MEU" (translating would be something like : "MIRROR MIRROR MY"), but the correct is : "FALA MÁGICO ESPELHO" ("TALK MAGIC MIRROR"). It turns out the phrase is translated the incorrect way in other languages too. Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who's the fairest on the land? Other languages Spieglein, Spieglein, an der Wand, Wer ist die Schönste im ganzen Land? The movie Snow White was based on is the earlier Brothers Grimm fairy tale book in which it actually is written "Mirror, mirror.", so this line would have already been in the public consciousness by then, and Disney changing it at the time might not have been noticed. There could be an explanation for this one, however. It's referenced as "Mirror, mirror" in many places too - such as the Shrek movie, and there is even a movie actually titled "Mirror, mirror" too. Pretty much everyone remembers the quote from Disneys 1937 classic "Snow White" as "Mirror, mirror on the wall." but in the movie the line is actually "Magic mirror on the wall.". Made in 1961, the year the Berlin Wall was erected, Schneewittchen has a distinctly Socialist slant. The dwarfs, kitchen staff, and Snow White herself are all portrayed as industrious and cheerful workers and the film is clearly critical of the Queen's wasteful and condescending ways. The influence of Disney's 1937 version of Snow White is unmistakably present, particularly in the characterization of the dwarfs and their slap-stick antics. However, there is also a Brechtian element in the DEFA adaptation, as the audience is intended to recognize the artificiality of the set, costumes, and so on. The moral of the story is the focus here: that all kinds of people, from all social strata, must work together to create a better world.Įnormously appealing to children with songs that are easy to remember and fun to sing, Schneewittchen is one of the most popular DEFA feature film fairy tales. It is excellent for use in the classroom with students of all levels and language abilities.Current: Magic mirror Did the movie change the line?
